The favourite wins. It says so right on the label.
This is an original New Old Stock bottle label for TOTE Sportsman's Tonic — a circa 1930s American lithograph featuring a jockey and horse surging ahead of the pack, the border shaped like a horseshoe, the slogan arching confidently across the bottom: The Favourite Wins. Never used, never attached to a bottle. Two available.
This is a label only. No frame is included. It is suitable for framing and we recommend doing so to preserve its condition.
The design has the effortless confidence of Depression-era commercial art at its best — economical, expressive, and completely alive. The jockey leans forward, the horse is all momentum, and the horseshoe border frames it like a talisman. TOTE was a reference to the totalisator machine that calculated bets at the track — the name alone tells you exactly who this was for. Whether the tonic itself was soda water, quinine water, or something rather more spirited remains pleasantly unclear. What's certain is that the label is genuine, original, and the paper has the warm yellowing of age visible on the reverse — consistent with its nearly century-old provenance. Guaranteed original, not a reproduction.
Frame it alone or pair it with other equestrian or sporting ephemera for a layered display. Equally at home in a study, a bar, a tack room, or alongside a collection of vintage Americana.
A wonderful gift for a horse racing enthusiast, an equestrian collector, a lover of 1930s design, or anyone who appreciates the art of the American sporting life.
